Searching for a workout energy drink that promises a quick boost for a couple of hours? Well, Reign Energy Drinks might be the choice for you.

Reign Energy drink is a workout drink that can give you pre-workout fuel, mid-workout boost, and post-workout recovery.

But how well does Reign Energy really work, and could this energy drink actually be bad for you?

For the short answer, so long as you have it in moderation, Reign Energy Drink’s shouldn’t be bad for you at all, but due to Reign’s exceptionally high caffeine content, it’s definitely not for everyone, especially if you’re caffeine-sensitive.

For a more in-depth look at Reign Energy Drinks and how good (or bad) it is for you, read on.

The question is… how nutritious or healthy is a can of Reign? Can it really give you the workout boost that you need?

Reign Energy Drink Calorie Content

A 16 fl.oz can of Reign has between 0 – 10 calories (depending on which flavor you get), making it significantly less impactful on your diet than most other sugary energy drinks.

As a reference point, an 8.4 fl.oz can of Red Bull will net you around 80 calories, while a similarly sized 16 fl.oz can of Monster has a whopping 210 calories.

Similar to Bang (another sugar-free, high caffeine energy drink) of the immediate rush of energy from Reign is from its caffeine content more than anything else.

As such, Reign is great if you’re looking for a low-calorie drink to suit your workout routine or dietary needs, but it’s definitely not going to give you any substantial amount of energy for your cells.

As a reminder, the daily recommended caloric intake for healthy adults is between 2000 to 2400 calories for women and 2400 to 3000 calories for men.

Due to this, Reign is definitely not enough to power you through your workout session solely by itself (neither is it a great meal replacement either), so be sure to stock up on some actual food before hitting the gym with Reign.

And speaking of Bang Energy, have a look at my Bang VS Reign Energy Drink article to see how these two low-calorie, high-caffeine energy drinks compare with each other.

Other Ingredients

L-Leucine, L-lsoleucine, and L-Valine make up the BCAAs in Reign.

You’re naturally getting BCAA on food. And if you follow a healthy diet, you may be getting more of it than the usual amount.

BCAAs (Branch Chained Amino Acid) boost muscle growth, enhance exercise performance, and reduce exercise-induced fatigue.

Other benefits of BCAA includes:

  • decrease muscle soreness
  • prevent muscle breakdown
  • improve the condition of people with liver diseases

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance that provides functions to the cells.

CoQ10 is helpful in preserving cells and can also prevent and treat chronic diseases.

The body naturally produces CoQ10 which decreases as we age. So, consuming drinks with CoQ10 helps to make up for that.

Some of the benefits that you can get from CoQ10 includes:

  • reduced headaches
  • keep skin young
  • could help with fertility
  • increases exercise performance

The thing is, we don’t really know how much is the amount of CoQ10 in Reign. It is impossible to point out its substantial benefits for now.

An energy drink staple, B-Vitamins are present in Reign Energy Drink and are fairly substantial.

B-Vitamins are important ingredients in energy drinks because they promote:

  • energy level
  • good digestion
  • muscle tone
  • healthy appetite

I’ve listed all the B-Vitamins found in Reign in the table below, but if you want more information on B-Vitamins, Harvard has a pretty handy resource here.

PurposeAmount per 16 fl.oz of ReignTolerable Upper Intake Level
Vitamin B3 (Niacin)Helps body release energy; keeps skin healthy.21.6mg35mg
Vitamin B6Store energy from protein and carbohydrates; formation of red blood cells2.0mg100mg
Vitamin B12Release energy from food; forms red blood cells; keeps the nervous system healthy6.25µg

While it does look like Reign goes a bit overboard with the amount of B-Vitamins present in the drink, it’s well within suggested Tolerable Upper Intake Limits, so you don’t have to worry too much about the B-Vitamin content of Reign.

Reign Energy Drink Calorie Content

A 16 fl. oz. can of Reign Energy has 10 calories. This is way below the daily recommended calorie intake in a healthy adult, i.e. between 2,400 to 3,000 calories for men and 2,000 to 2,400 calories for women.

The amount of calories in Reign is also significantly low compared to other energy drinks in the market. For example, a 8.4 fl. oz. can of Red Bull contains 80 calories and 16 fl. oz. Monster has 210 calories.

As you can see, there isn’t much caloric content in Reign. So, you don’t have to worry about any health issues that may occur as long as you drink in moderation.

Also, it won’t affect your diet. There are people who have included Reign in their keto diet.

How Much Caffeine is in Reign Energy Drink?

Every 16 fl. oz. can of Reign Energy drink features 300mg caffeine content made of fresh tea leaves and green coffee beans.

It is one of the strongest energy drink available in the market alongside its closest competitor Bang.

The amount of caffeine in Reign makes it a perfect workout drink as it increases exercise performance and can help you recover quickly after an intense workout session.

On a side note, it is important to stick with FDA’s guideline, which a recommended daily caffeine intake of maximum 400 mg, to avoid health complications.

Drinking too much caffeine can lead to serious health conditions such as:

  • hypertension
  • heart problem
  • sleeping problems
  • addiction

On the other hand, caffeine also present possible health benefits if taken in moderation which includes:

  • improves memory
  • improves cognition
  • decreases fatigue
  • may prevent type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and liver disease

Thus, the 300 mg caffeine content could become a problem for people with caffeine sensitivity.

Does Reign Energy Contain Sugar?

A jar full of sugar with some sugar cubes off to the side.
Sweet, but not exactly healthy.

Reign Energy Drinks do not contain sugar at all, making them a sugar-free an energy drink as you can get.

As a reminder, the AHA proposes a recommended sugar intake which is no more than 25g for women and 36g for men on a daily basis.

Therefore, going overboard with the recommended daily intake can lead to:

  • weight gain
  • high blood pressure
  • inflammation
  • fatty liver disease
  • diabetes
  • heart attack
  • stroke

So while you may not experience that “dopamine rush” you most often associate with energy drinks, Reign is certainly a lot more beneficial to your overall health due to the lack of sugar present in the drink.

That being said, you’re also a lot less susceptible to a sugar crash as well, which is definitely a good thing if you plan on working long after the caffeine effects have run out.

Does Reign Energy Use Artificial Sweeteners?

While free of regular sugar, Reign Energy does contain artificial sweeteners, namely sucralose and acesulfame potassium.

As both sucralose and acesulfame potassium are zero-calorie sweeteners, you’ll be getting the sweetness without all the guilt that comes along with it, which is a plus.

While controversies about the long-term use of artificial sweeteners do exist, the FDA has approved them for general use, so as long as you’re not consuming too many artificial sweeteners in your food, you should be alright.

Reign Energy Drink Side Effects

The most common side effects of Reign Energy drink are usually due to it’s high-caffeine content, which often means insomnia, restlessness or jitteriness, especially if you’re not used to products with higher caffeine than usual.

Some of the side effects that you may experience includes:

  • sleeping difficulty
  • excessive energy
  • sudden loss of energy
  • headaches
  • jitters and shakes

The 300mg caffeine content of the Reign Energy drink is unlikely to give you any side effects if consumed responsibly, that being said, every individual does respond to caffeine differently, so your personal mileage may definitely vary.

As such, I strongly advice to limit caffeine intake to avoid overdose, caffeine discomfort, and other health-related issues.

But don’t worry too much about it. You’re perfectly fine as long as you follow the recommended intake per day.

So be sure to remember not to have any other caffeinated beverage if you are drinking Reign to avoid exceeding the limit!

How Bad is Reign for You?

If consumed in moderation, Reign Energy drink is definitely not going to be detrimental to health, so long as you’re able to tolerate it’s high caffeine content.

Reign Energy has higher caffeine content compared to other energy drinks.

It is also one of the strongest energy drinks available and it could be a problem if you happen to be caffeine sensitive or if you’re new to caffeinated beverages.

But, it’s matter of discovering your level of caffeine sensitivity and researching about the energy drink that suits your needs.

Is Reign better than Red Bull?

There are several reasons why Reign is preferable to Red Bull. For starters, Reign has no sugar, whereas Red Bull contains 27 grams of sugar per can. This means that Reign will not give you the crash that you might get from Red Bull.

Reign is a much more balanced and healthy option. This is because Reign energy drink contains electrolytes and vitamins, whereas Red Bull lacks these nutrients.

Is Reign healthier than monster?

Reign contains no added sugar, whereas Monster contains a lot of sugar. Finally, Reign has less fat and calories than Monster.

With that, Reign may be healthier than Monster for a variety of reasons. For one thing, Reign is made entirely of natural ingredients, whereas Monster is loaded with artificial flavors and colors.

Final Thoughts

All-in-all, Reign Energy Drinks definitely pack quite a bit of punch, and is a strong contender for energy drink of choice if you happen to live a fairly active lifestyle.

That being said, with 300mg of caffeine per can, Reign might actually have too much of a good thing, so be sure to watch your overall caffeine intake if you do decide to have a can.

But so long as you know how to have your energy drinks in moderation and aren’t overtly caffeine-sensitive, having a can of Reign every now and then will certainly be more beneficial than detrimental.
