During the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, Red Bull introduced its watermelon-flavored summer edition. Since then, this variant has established itself as one of the top watermelon energy drinks.
Watermelon or Red Edition of Red Bull comes with a distinctive look and improved flavor. It’s worth noting that this is a seasonal drink and will only be available in summer implying its freshness since watermelon is a fruit of summers only.
You may not find it overly sweet like other energy drinks in a similar flavor. This deep red colored drink has enough caffeine and other components to help you start your day.
Keep on reading as I’m going to share with you some pros and cons of this drink. I’ll also share what Red Bull Red edition tastes like.
Let’s get on it….

Caffeine Levels in Red Bull Red Edition
The caffeine level of Red Bull doesn’t vary with the flavors. In each 8.4 fl.oz can, you’ll see 80 milligrams of caffeine. So, if you want to replace it with your morning coffee, you won’t find any better option. Let me tell you that an average cup of coffee contains probably the same dose of caffeine.
This amount of caffeine may work for those with low caffeine tolerance. But, if you like to keep your caffeine intake high, you can either go for 12 fl. oz. or you can take two cans to get the desired results.
Here you should keep in mind, FDA regulates to keep your caffeine intake below 400 milligrams per day. Taking too much caffeine might adversely affect your health.
Also, once you’ve built a tolerance for caffeine, your body will need and crave more of it to feel the high intensity every time and too much caffeine might cause:
- High blood pressure
- Headache
- Anxiety
- Sleeplessness
- Crash
- Jitters
Therefore, it’s best to not go overboard with this nootropic.
Is Red Bull Red Edition Sugar-free?
Red Bull doesn’t offer sugar-free variants of these special editions any longer. They might have discontinued making the sugar-free variant of the watermelon edition or there would be some other reasons. However, you won’t find them in online or physical stores.
The sugar level of this variant is 11 grams per 100 ml, which is almost similar to what you get from 100 ml apple juice. Let me tell you that this amount of sugar in 250 ml serving exceeds the recommended dose for women.
The AHA recommends women to keep their sugar intake below 24 grams, while for men it’s 36 grams. First of all, those with diabetes shouldn’t have this drink due to its high sugar content. Secondly this much amount of sugar is still high even for healthy adults and can cause various symptoms.
Here’s what you may experience when taking too much sugar;
- Acne
- Weight gain
- Depression
- Heart problem
- Crash
You shouldn’t overdo this drink in case you don’t want to experience any of the above issues.
Nutrients In Red Bull Red Edition
Red Bull is not like other drinks that come with a long list of nootropics. You’ll see a great dose of B group vitamins. Let me tell you that all variants come along with the same four nutrients.
Let’s see how they benefit you;
Niacin (140%)
The safe dose of this vitamin, which isn’t associated with any health problems, is below 35 mg. It reduces depression, enhances cognitive functions, and helps reduce blood pressure.
So, you can say that Red Edition may help students and those who do brain-intensive work.
Vitamin B6 (350%)
An unknown amount of this vitamin also reduces depression and enhances your mood. Also, it does make your immune system stronger. 1.7 mg is the daily recommended value for this nutrient.
Since there’s no exact information regarding the amount of vitamins, you wouldn’t know how much you’re consuming.
Vitamin B12 (120%)
You’ll find this B vitamin common in all drinks. The reason for adding this is that it comes with some great benefits. Like the other two vitamins, it’s equally beneficial for depression and improving mood.
It may also provide you with an energy boost. But, you should keep your intake below 2.4 mcg.
Pantothenic acid (70%)
Vitamin B5 or pantothenic acid performs necessary functions in the body. You don’t need to always take this vitamin from supplements, many health foods such as potatoes, lentils, and nuts contain this.
It’s useful when taken in the following conditions;
- Acne
- Insomnia
- Dizziness
- Obesity
- Headaches
Well, this and other variants of Red Bull are also great sources to supplement this vitamin.
How Much Sodium In Red Bull Red Edition?
The amount of sodium in Red Edition is 25 mg less than what you get in the original variant of Red Bull. You get 125 mg of this electrolyte in a 355 ml can of watermelon edition. If you’re not aware of the benefits of this electrolyte, let me tell you that it helps you recover from long gym sessions.
Sodium‘s benefits include:
- Prevent stroke
- Good for low blood pressure
- Improve brain function
- Relax your muscles
You shouldn’t go beyond 2.3 grams of sodium a day. Or, you may experience high blood pressure with too much sodium.
Review of Red Bull Red Edition
Lately, Red Bull has been making the additions of all unique flavors. There’s a huge difference in the taste of Red Edition and an original variant of Red Bull. It’s an improved version containing the hint of watermelon.
Red Bull Red Edition is a bit overpriced, however, the taste justifies this factor. Let’s have a look at both the pros and cons of this summer edition:
Pros
- Improved taste of watermelon
- Helps in recovering from long gym sessions
- Concentration and focus
- The energy boost that may last for 3 to 5 hours
- Doesn’t cause crashes or jitters
- Not overly sweet
- Lightly carbonated
Cons
- Contain a large dose of sugar and carbs
- May raise the blood sugar level
- May drain energy
- Overly priced
- Price fluctuation
- Only available in summer
- An unknown amount of ingredients
How Does Red Bull Red Edition Taste Like?
This summer edition is better tasting than the original variant of Red Bull. It tastes exactly like what it represents; watermelon. You’ll like it if you’re a fan of energy beverages with watermelon flavor.
You can say it’s a jolly rancher in liquid form that is loaded with caffeine and taurine. However, it’s not as sour as a jolly rancher. If you rarely drink Red Bull or you aren’t a fan of the original flavor, Red Edition might be worth trying.
Where Should You Buy Red Bull Red Edition?
There’s no denying that this edition of Red Bull is always out of stock in physical stores. So, the only option you are left with is getting these from online stores.
In online options, Amazon comes first on my priority list due to its best deals and convenience. If you buy in bulk, you’ll get better deals than what you get at Walmart.
However, I’d recommend trying a can or two before buying a whole case.
It’s important to mention here that the price for the Red Edition of Red Bull fluctuates a lot. The reason might be its increasing demand. It’s no secret that since the launch of this variant, its popularity has been increasing. Another reason might be its seasonal availability.
Conclusion
I would rate this drink with a 9 out of 10.
This fruit-based energy beverage has the same formula as other variants of Red Bull. Due to its caffeine and taurine content, it allows you to get through even the busiest day.
The best part is that it doesn’t leave any aftertaste that you may experience with the watermelon flavor of other brands.
I wouldn’t recommend this drink if you have sugar sensitivity, you’re pregnant, nursing, or under 18. If you’re healthy and want a new addition to get through the day, you should try it to see how it works for you.
