As you can tell, there’s not much to 5 Hour Energy in the way of calories, so the ‘energy’ you’re getting from it is largely going to be derived from caffeine.

Apart from that, you’re also getting a frankly ludicrous amount of B-Vitamins as well as other energy drink favorites such as Taurine and inositol, all of which have varying degree of benefit for your overall energy levels.

Pros of 5-Hour Energy

Low on Calories

A bottle of 5-Hour Energy contain a little to no amount of calories.

That means you don’t need to worry about extra weight when drinking 5-Hour because it has minimal effect on your overall weight. This seems to be a good choice if you want to have a boost while you are on a strict calorie-deficit diet.

Regardless, I still think it is important to watch your calorie intake and make sure you have enough calories for your body to function fully.

No Sugar

Besides being low on calories, there is also no sugar present in 5-Hour Energy.

To add a sweet taste and flavor, 5-Hour uses sucralose, an artificial sweetener. Sucralose is 600 times sweeter than sugar and is synthetically made. It is also approved by the FDA for widespread use because of its safety.

Besides artificial sweeteners, 5-Hour Energy also uses natural sweeteners and flavorings to add to its blend.

Cons of 5-Hour Energy

High Caffeine Content

Since 5-Hour has little calories and no sugar content, the 200mg of caffeine is the main source of ‘energy’ you’ll be geting from it.

Caffeine may be beneficial now and then. Too much caffeine has some serious health harm that some dieticians and health experts are eyeing over.

Some side effects include:

  • Anxiety
  • Jitters
  • Inability to focus
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Heart palpitations

Coming back to 5-Hour Energy, each bottle contains 200mg. And the FDA-recommended caffeine daily limit is 400mg. It may still be under the limit but still strong enough that it might still cause side effects, especially with how quickly you can consume all that caffeine.

As such, it is advisable to consume 5-Hour Energy strictly when you need it, and have something else for your daily caffeine fix instead; while it’s perfectly okay to have 200mg of caffeine a day, I’d rather it be from a 16 fl.oz energy drink rather than a fairly small bottle.

Artificial Sweeteners

Although it doesn’t have serious adverse effects like sugar has, artificial sweeteners such as sucralose may have their potential downsides.

study conducted on 17 patients dealing with obesity found that their blood sugar and insulin levels have increased after consuming Sucralose. However, the effects aren’t significant on those who regularly consume this sweetener.

Considering these effects caused by artificial sweeteners, I do recommend watching your artificial sweetener intake just as much you would caffeine and sugar.
